Thrissur Pooram (Temple Festival)

The Thekkinkadu Maidanam (means open place) is considered as the heart of Thrissur town.  Thrissur Pooram transforms it into a stage of splendor, passion and beauty. Thrissur Pooram is called as ‘Pooram of Poorams’. It was initiated by Sakthan Thampuran, Cochin Maharaja.

Thrissur Pooram is held at Thekkinkadu Maidanam, near Vadakunathan temple in collaboration with 10 other temples. It is celebrated in the Malayalam month of medam (April-May) on pooram star. The story behind it tells that deities from other areas are visiting Vadukumnathan, Lord Shiva accompanied by chenda and pancha vadyam.
